At midnight on January 1, fireworks explode over the Sydney Opera House. In New York City, a glittering ball descends in Times Square as confetti flies. For decades, Los Angeles had to be content with satellite feeds of the latter's NYE shenanigans or travel to Vegas for variations on the same theme. Door charge. Bottle charge. Overcharged. And over it. Thankfully, for four years now, L.A. has gathered thousands of revelers in Grand Park downtown. With three music stages, an army of food trucks and 3-D lights for a City of Angels countdown, families will experience this momentous midnight in rare style: no cars, with free admission. Happy 2017, Los Angeles.
