For every Janis Joplin, Nina Simone, Kim Gordon and Liz Phair who have made it in the music industry, there have been roughly 50 million men whose fame, credibility and respect came way more easily. Changing the game means highlighting the women pioneering alternative sounds, and that's what Girlschool does with its indie music festival. The lineup of primarily women artists includes goth- and folk-influenced Chelsea Wolfe, L.A.-based synthpop The Bird and the Bee and garage rock duo Deap Vally. Part of the proceeds benefit Rock n' Roll Camp for Girls, a nonprofit helping create the next generation of fearless rock stars. As Queen Bey says, "My persuasion can build a nation."

Female musicians and DJs own the stage for a weekend of music.
