Once upon a time, comics fans browsed hole-in-the-wall stores stocked full of comics and graphic novels, geeking out with their fellow superfans just outside the mainstream. But now the subculture has become the culture. Today, nearly 60,000 people gather for WonderCon, many of them in elaborate and eye-popping cosplay. Join like-minded mutants this weekend in Anaheim to meet authors and artists, see panel talks, snap selfies with cult stars, watch anime screenings, play games and browse an almost endless array of exhibition booths. (And yes, there are lounge areas and food.) Three-day passes and Saturday passes are already sold out, so hustle if you want to attend on Friday or Sunday.

WonderCon is Comic-Con's sister event, held (for now) in Anaheim.
