What was that potent whiff of herbs? We found that we were close to a tavern called Gambilya Doğal Mutfak – perhaps they had some basil in the window. But when we peered in, we saw far more than just a pot – a whole kitchen garden was sprouting beyond. Lale beckoned us in and showed us proudly around her fragrant plot, pointing out each carefully labeled plant and telling us its beneficial properties. Tummies rumbling, we then sat down to taste them in the day's specialties: 'gambilya' (wild pea) soup, pinto bean balls dusted with cinnamon, and walnut and green lentil patties. Worried about food miles? Here, it's more like centimeters from vegetable patch to plate!
